Miss Salma Chaudhury MB BChir, MA (Cantab) PhD (Oxon) FRCS)Tr is an expert Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow conditions, including trauma and sports injuries. She is a Consultant at Cambridge University Hospital Trust, where she treats the most severely injured and complex shoulder and elbow conditions. She has vast expertise with 20 years of experience. She is an internationally recognised expert in her field, with a strong academic track record in shoulder and elbow research and obtaining large research grants.
World Class Shoulder and Elbow Expertise and Training
She is triple fellowship trained in the latest shoulder and elbow surgery techniques from international centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading. She trained for 1 year in New York at Hospital for Special Surgery, the leading orthopaedic hospital in the USA.
Salma won the prestigious British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) travelling fellowship. She has visited Basel, Switzerland and the Mayo Clinic, USA to develop advanced elbow and shoulder surgery techniques.
Shoulder and Elbow Expert
Her particular surgical expertise include but are not limited to:
- Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to address rotator cuff tendon pathologies (the subject of her PhD from Oxford University)
- Shoulder dislocations/instability (she undertook the biggest study of outcomes following shoulder dislocations).
- Shoulder and elbow replacements – both primary and revisions
- Complex trauma – Salma works at Cambridge University Hospital, which is the regional Level 1 Trauma Centre and treats the most severely injured patients
- Offering second opinions on complex shoulder and elbow tertiary referrals from other surgeons/hospitals
- Elbow pathologies
- Primary and revision nerve decompressions of the upper limb including carpal tunnel and ulna nerve decompressions
She has vast expertise of over 20 years.
Internationally Recognised Academic Expert
Salma is a recognised international expert on shoulder and elbow healing.
She holds a PhD from Oxford University in Orthopaedic Surgery focused on shoulder degeneration plus surgical and biological techniques to improve tendon healing. Salma has widely published on shoulder and elbow surgery.
To date she has received almost half a million pounds in grants to research shoulder and elbow problems. Salma is an Associate Editor for one of the leading British Orthopaedic Journals (British Joint Journal 360).
Through her national British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) research committee positions, she supports orthopaedic research in the UK. Salma has been invited to extensively lecture and teach internationally and nationally. She is a reviewer for several major orthopaedic journals in the USA and UK including Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Bone and Joint Journal.
National Orthopaedic Leadership Roles
Salma has a longstanding commitment to improving and provided outstanding patient care and outcomes. In recognition of this, she holds a number of national orthopaedic leadership roles.
She sits on the orthopaedic governing body in the UK, the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) council.
She also sits on the leading shoulder and elbow committee for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS).
Previously she sat on the executive committee for the British Orthopaedic Research Society.
