Miss Salma Chaudhury MB BChir, MA (Cantab) PhD (Oxon) FRCS)Tr, I am an expert Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in Shoulder and Elbow conditions, including trauma and sports injuries. I am a Consultant at Cambridge University Hospital Trust, where I treat the most severely injured and complex shoulder and elbow conditions. I have vast expertise with 20 years of experience. I am an internationally recognised expert in her field, with a strong academic track record in shoulder and elbow research.

I am triple fellowship trained from international centres of shoulder excellence, having trained at Oxford, Cambridge and Reading, as well as Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.

My particular surgical expertise lies in:

  • Arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery to address rotator cuff tendon pathologies (the subject of her PhD from Oxford University)
  • Shoulder dislocations/instability (she undertook the biggest study of outcomes following shoulder dislocations).
  • Shoulder and elbow replacements – both primary and revisions
  • Complex trauma – Salma works at Cambridge University Hospital, which is the regional Level 1 Trauma Centre and treats the most severely injured patients
  • Offering second opinions on complex shoulder and elbow tertiary referrals from other surgeons/hospitals
  • Elbow problems

Qualifications

I received world class education and training, having studied at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, and St Pauls’ Girl’s School in London.

  • MB BChir (Cantab) – I studied medicine at Cambridge University
  • Masters MA – I hold a Masters from Cambridge University
  • PhD (DPhil) in Orthopaedic Surgery from Oxford University. My PhD focused on understanding rotator cuff degeneration, tears and augmented repair techniques.

Training

  • All of my surgical and orthopaedic training was undertaken in Oxford where I completed my Fellowship, Registrar Training and Basic Surgical Training.
  • I have triple fellowship training from world renowned centres for excellence in shoulder surgery: Cambridge, Oxford and Reading.
  • I spent one year at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.
  • I was awarded the prestigious British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) travelling fellowship. I have also visited experts at the Mayo Clinic (USA) and Basel (Switzerland).

Academic Expert

I have a strong academic track record in producing high quality research, which is critical in providing the best evidence based patient care. I am a recognised international expert on shoulder and elbow healing.

  • I hold a PhD from Oxford University in Orthopaedic Surgery, which studied shoulder degeneration, plus surgical and biological techniques to improve healing. I have published widely on these areas and general orthopaedics.
  • To date I have received over £450,000 in grants to research shoulder and elbow problems.
  • I am an Associate Editor for one of the leading British Orthopaedic Journals (British Joint Journal 360), allowing me to stay up to date with the latest research and evidence-based management.
  • I was the social media co-editor for the Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery for 7 years
  • Through my roles on national research committees, I help oversee and guide orthopaedic research. I on the Research Council for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) and until recently was an Executive Committee member for the British Orthopaedic Research Society (BORS).
  • I actively involved in national orthopaedic clinical trials, and held Associate Principle Investigator roles in two national randomised control trials.
  • My latest research is developing novel imaging techniques for early detection of shoulder arthritis.
  • I am a reviewer for several major orthopaedic journals in the USA and UK including Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, American Journal of Sports Medicine, Bone and Joint Journal, Journal of Orthopaedic Research, Arthritis Care & Research and Shoulder and Elbow Journal.

I have been invited to extensively lecture and teach internationally and nationally in the USA, Europe, China, Palestine and the UK.

National Orthopaedic Leadership Roles

As part of a long-standing dedication to improving orthopaedic care for all patients across the UK, I have been selected for a number of national leadership roles. I was selected as a British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) council member, which is the main orthopaedic governing body in the UK.

I sit on the senior British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) Research Committee.

I am committed to improving training for all doctors and patient outcomes and has done a lot of work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) initiatives. My roles include:

  • Elected senior BOA EDI lead for Thames Valley.
  • Royal College of Surgeons Working Parents Group.

Committed Educator

Teaching future doctors to improve patient care has always been a big part of my work. A few highlights are listed below:

Organised large teaching programmes:

  • I was co-director of Oxford University undergraduate medical student orthopaedic teaching for 4 years.
  • I have organised a number of national orthopaedic courses, including an orthopaedic management and leadership course.

Skilled at teaching different groups and adapting my style:

  • I taught on the Oxford University MSC course
  • I have taught international students in China and Palestine about shoulder trauma
  • Other healthcare professions such as nurses at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, who I taught about shoulder replacements
  • Physicians assistants at Reading University were taught about fracture healing

Multi-modality teaching techniques to improve engagement:

  • Cadaveric teaching e.g. – Cambridge Shoulder to Fingertips course
  • Virtual teaching – ORUK FRCS revision
  • Simulation – I was awarded £40,000 to buy trauma mannequins to teach medical students at Oxford University
